Lalka Tchalukova

She is one of the few remaining masters of the kalofer lace. She learned the art from the aunt, who in turn inherited it from her great-grandmother. She owns 240 shuttles with which she knits on a special cylinder to create the incredibly beautiful motifs that decorate her works.

There are eight exhibitions in her history. Here's what the author herself says:

"I was born on 14.01.1942 in the town Karlovo. I graduated from the economic technical school in Plovdiv. In 1989, as we were furnishing the dining room in our new house, I decided some kalofer lace tablecloths and curtains would suit it perfectly. I asked my aunt, who was a master of the kalofer lace, to make me some and her reply was "I will start them but who will finish them?". That was when I decided to learn the craft. Thanks to the support of my husband and my aunt's stubbornness (everything must be completely perfect) I managed to learn. Now, I have a large collection of kalofer laces, all one of a kind.

The craft is already almost extinct, which is why I decided to revive it. I hope I succeed since it really is a wonderful craft!"
